Dance
Kalapriya specializes in Bharata Natyam, an Indian dance tradition whose history spans several millennia. Originally danced in the temple and at court by a specially trained class of female dancers, Bharata Natyam is a dance form recounting Indian mythology and cultural traditions. Today, it is the most widely practiced style of dance in India.
Throughout the year, Kalapriya presents dance performances featuring the Kalapriya Dancers plus special appearances by our artistic collaborators. Past events have introduced Chicago audiences to Bharata Natyam, Odissi, Kathak, and many other Indian and Asian dance traditions. For advance notice of upcoming concerts, please join our email list!
Kalapriya also performs throughout the year in concerts in the Chicago Public Schools, and at a variety of public festivals and events throughout Chicagoland. Find a complete list of upcoming appearances here.
Artistic Collaborators
One of Kalapriya’s core beliefs is that world cultures, and the art that reflects them, do not exist in a vacuum. They are constantly evolving, influenced by current events and enriched by cross-cultural exchange. Kalapriya celebrates the rich, ever-evolving diversity of Indian performing arts through its work with a host of artistic collaborators, each of whom is a leader in his or her field.
Can’t wait until the next concert to experience Kalapriya and the exquisite art of Bharata Natyam? You’ll find videos of some of our most memorable performances here.
