Community Outreach
Kalapriya perpetuates and illuminates the diverse cultures of India through free dance and music performances and workshops at venues such as libraries, museums and community centers. Also Kalapriya holds residencies in schools to promote a better understanding of Indian art and culture.
Kalapriya presents in- school residency programs using Indian dance as the medium to meet the individual needs of each schools’ overall school improvement plan. Specifically, the residencies address the need for culturally specific arts programming within the school environment and offer reinforcement of the core curriculum in the areas of social science (historical development); language arts (literature, storytelling, drama and poetry) and math (rhythms, time, fractions, etc.). The programs promote self-awareness and create a positive self-esteem as the students learn about another culture. Kalapriya tailors the program to each individual school’s needs with 5 or 10 weeklong programs. A sample lesson plan can be viewed here.
